Fragrances – Discount vs Designer

The world of fragrances is highly competitive. There are literally hundreds of different brands and thousands of different products out there, all wanting your attention. There are fragrances that run into the thousands of dollars, and those that will not cost an arm and a leg. So, what is better – discount or designer fragrances?

Discount fragrances

If you are a regular person with a regular job, or if you are not the sort of person to spend a lot of money on fashion or beauty, then a discount fragrance will probably be the way to go. Discount fragrances range anywhere from $5 to $50, and so are much more affordable than their designer counterparts. If you are looking for a discount fragrance there are many different places you can buy them from. For the absolute bargain basement type, try markets, supermarkets, or bargain / thrifty stores. This is where you will find your cheap $5 fragrance imported from China or another Asian country. This sort of fragrance might smell fine, but it will be made out of incredibly inferior ingredients, and the smell will likely change not long after you have applied it, turning into something bland, boring, or just plain terrible. This sort of fragrance will also not last very long on your body, so will need to be reapplied more often. However, if you are very strapped for cash, this might be the only choice open to you, so try to make the best of it by reapplying when you can.

A step up from this would be a mid-range discount fragrance. You might find this at a pharmacy or a chain store, and it will be of much better quality than the bargain basement type of fragrance. The ingredients used will still be inferior to those in a designer fragrance, however they will likely cover you in a much nicer scent than the cheaper style. This mid-range fragrance will also last you longer, as you will not have to reapply it as often. The top of this category is the premium-style discount fragrances. Ranging up to about $50, they are not necessarily cheap, but they are much more affordable than a luxury designer fragrance. You might even recognize the brands of these fragrances, such as Avon and Elizabeth Arden. The quality of ingredients will be much higher, and this sort of fragrance will definitely last you for a fair while. If you can afford it, one of these top levels of discount fragrances is the best way to go in this category.

Designer fragrances

If you love fashion and beauty, and have some money to spare, you will probably want to splash out on a designer fragrance. In this category you will be likely to pay anywhere from $70 for a small bottle, upwards to a few hundred. There are several categories of designer fragrances for you to choose from. A new category of designer fragrances is celebrity fragrances. These carry the names of Hollywood celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Britney Spears. There is a lot of demand for this sort of celebrity product, and more and more stars are signing up to release their own fragrance. However, the most popular category over the last few decades have been those released by major designer fashion houses. These are names such as Chanel, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and Burberry. These are often the most expensive of all of the designer fragrances. They come packaged in fashionable boxes, with beautifully designed bottles and are a real fashion purchase. This sort of fragrance can run you into hundreds of dollars, if you choose the top labels and the biggest size bottle. For some perfumes such as Chanel No. 5, a large bottle can cost you over $1000!

The height of luxury

If you want to spend even more than this, there are perfume manufacturers that specifically design luxury perfumes with a hefty price tag. The most expensive and luxurious of these is from a company called Clive Christian. This company’s perfume called “Clive Christian No. 1“ is made out of extremely luscious and rare ingredients – so rare that the recipe often has to be changed due to the ingredients no longer existing! A bottle of this perfume will cost you in excess of $2000, and only 1000 bottles of each the men’s and women’s are released every year. Not quite luxurious enough? Well, you can get your “Clive Christian No. 1“ in a limited edition crystal bottle set with diamonds, for a little over $200,000! Now that really is a luxury fragrance!

When it comes to fragrances, the battle between discount and designer is far from over! What you choose comes down to you – both your budget and your personality. The great thing is that there is so much choice out there that it should not be hard to find a great fragrance that fits both!
